The
Ministry of the Public Service is sponsoring a series of weekly orientation
workshops to familiarize new recruits to the Public Service with procedures,
policies, and other key aspects of the operations of Government.
According to Senior Training Officer Lydia Anselm, the workshops are aimed at helping public officers to become more comfortable and confident in carrying out their daily tasks, thereby enhancing professionalism and efficiency in the Public Service.
She said the workshops had revealed that misunderstandings some government employees have about the operations of the Public Service, stemmed from ignorance.
“We’re looking at the structure of the Public Service, we’re looking at the legal aspects of the Public Service, we are looking at the role of the public officer, we are also looking at the rules, procedures and guidelines, staff orders, the institution and so on,” Anselm explained
She added: “I think what the participants are even more interested in, is what is expected of them, what is their level of authority, what is the source of their authority, and what is the source of all authority that is being exercised within the Public Service.”
Resource persons for the orientation workshops include Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Public Service Wilbert King, Cabinet Secretary Victor Poyotte, and other experienced public officers.
“The choice of these resource persons have proved to be very impactful because of their intimate understanding of the Public Service and the workings of the Public Service,” Anselm said. “We also have the Research Officer Mr. Anius and the Chief Personnel Officer dealing with industrial matters as well as terms of conditions of work.” |
