OERU and CARICOM in First Joint Meeting |
May 21, 2001 - Specialists from the OECS Education Reform Unit (OERU) and the CARICOM Secretariat recently staged their first joint meeting on Human Resource Development. The meeting held at the CARICOM’s Guyana based secretariat, is a step towards establishing more synergy between both organizations for the greater good of the region. The teams looked at projects which they were presently undertaking and identified areas for collaboration. There was a rich exchange of knowledge and in some cases projects unknown to the other team were revealed. Both teams were satisfied that strides had been made in understanding what was taking place and in merging efforts for more successful outcomes and the sustainability of projects. The Head of the OERU, Lorna Callender, has expressed hope that the meeting marks the beginning of increasingly closer cooperation between the CARICOM and OECS Secretariats. CARICOM's Director of Human Resource Development, Jacquelyn Joseph, also concurred that the meeting is in keeping with the need for more joint planning. Dr. Joseph noted that different approaches being used by the OERU and CARICOM to achieve the same ends in education development could be quite valuable when merged. The OERU is satisfied that sharing information on development projects and research findings has helped to avoid the time consuming and the costly results of duplicating activities in the region. This is particularly helpful in avoiding situations where two different funding agencies stage similar regional workshops at the same time. Over the past two weeks the OERU participated in three regional meetings organised by the CARICOM Secretariat; a just ended conference in Georgetown for Chief Education Officers, a meeting on accreditation and a meeting, for Directors of Youth. |
