The OECS Supreme Court has come out in strong support of moves afoot locally
aimed at assisting persons who are unable to afford legal representation. Addressing
magistrates and attorneys who assembled at the High Court on Monday, September
17, 2001, for the ceremonial opening of a new law year, Resident Judge Justice
Adrian Saunders commended the local Bar Association for spearheading efforts in
setting up legal aid services on the island. “I
have no doubt that many of not many of the barristers in St. Lucia would from
time to time engage in his or her fair share of free work. It is important
however that legal aid be properly structured and made available on a organized
and systematic basis and I commend the leadership of you bar for the initiatives
being taken in this direction and I sincerely hope that these initiatives will
bare fruit,” said Saunders. The
OECS Resident Judge says the Supreme Court as an institution has constantly
sought to improving and enhancing the administration of justice by introducing
modest changes aimed at making witnesses more comfortable while providing
testimony. The Government of St. Lucia has too come out in support of the establishment of a legal aid centre on island. The Bar Association says whereas no fee will be paid to attorneys taking part in the initiative, litigants will nonetheless have to meet minor legal fees. |
