OECS Geological Awareness Project |
Contact: Julita Peter Thursday, June 07, 2001 - St. Lucia along with other OECS countries is beneficiary to a US$125,000 project to improve the level of awareness of geological hazards in the Eastern Caribbean. The project, coordinated by the Seismic Research Unit of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, is being executed through the development of appropriate public information products and programmes, and focuses on volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tidal waves.
The first component of the project was introduced in Trinidad recently, where disaster coordinators were re-educated on the nature of specific seismic hazards. The second leg involves a series of working sessions with disaster coordinators in individual OECS countries to assist them in developing an education program. The project will also set up permanent mechanisms by which knowledge of geological hazards is passed on to disaster preparedness personnel. It is being funded by the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and will run for a period of twelve months. Anguilla, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands and Trinidad and Tobago are among other countries to benefit from the project. |
