New Tourism Minister Satisfied with Year End Hotel Occupancy |
Castries, Monday, December 31, 2001- The Minister responsible for Commerce, Tourism, Investment and Consumer Affairs, the Hon. Philip J. Pierre, has expressed his satisfaction with the rebound in hotel occupancies since the tragic events of September 11th, which had severely affected tourism arrivals in St. Lucia and the Caribbean. The majority of local hotels are experiencing good guest occupancy levels for the Christmas season. This phenomenon has been supported by increases in cruise ship arrivals, and in fact Christmas day, show the largest number of cruise passengers on island for this winter season. The Minister singled out the Hyatt Regency Hotel for special mention. According to the Minister 'the good occupancy levels and the strong bookings for the first quarter for 2002, is a good sign for the long-term viability of the Hyatt Regency. In spite of the difficulties that the owners of the property - Pigeon Point Ltd - are now going through, the future of the hotel looks good." The Minister further noted that while the trend since September 11th, has been for shorter holiday booking periods, the Hyatt Regency is showing some good projected business well into March 2002, which speaks positively for the future of the hotel. |
