Monday, February 26, 2001 - The Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy, acting on the Advice of the Prime Minister under Section 24 (2) (a) of the Constitution, has appointed Mr. Nicholas Jean Baptiste to the Senate. Mr. Jean Baptiste replaces Mr. Perry Thomas, who resigned last month. He is expected to be a leading spokesperson on youth and agricultural affairs in the St. Lucia Parliament.

Mr. Jean Baptise is an attorney-at-law, currently employed in the chambers of Deterville and Associates. He is actively involved in youth and sports organisations in the wider Micoud area. Prior to his studies in Law, Mr. Jean Baptiste taught Agricultural Science at the Vieux-Fort Secondary School and also worked as an agricultural extension officer. He is well known within farming and agricultural circles in Micoud and surrounding areas.

Mr. Nicholas Jean Baptiste joins five other Senators appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister: Senate President Hilford Deterville, Calixte George, Petrus Compton, and Mrs. Agatha JnPanelle and Ms. Raye Maxwell.
