New Renal Unit for Victoria Hospital Coming Soon |
Tuesday, November 20, 2001 – Victoria Hospital will be getting a new renal unit soon. In the meantime, several of the island’s dialysis patients previously being treated at the Victoria Hospital have been transferred to the renal unit at the Tapion Hospital. The move comes as part of contractual arrangements entered into by the Ministry of Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender Relations and Island Dialysis of Tapion Hospital, as extensive renovation and improvement work takes place on the renal unit at Victoria Hospital.
Health Minister Honourable Sarah Flood-Beaubrun who paid a courtesy call on patients on Monday, November 19, 2001, said the arrangement that was expected to last for up to nine months was working out quite harmoniously. “Whilst they are being dialysed here at Tapion Hospital we will ensure that we do the refurbishment at Victoria Hospital so that we can transfer them at the end of this contractual arrangement to a newly refurbished dialysis unit at VH (Victoria Hospital) that meets international standards,” said Minister Flood-Beaubrun. According to her the refurbished unit will include new, state-of-the-art equipment and all the necessary modern amenities for patients undergoing such treatment. “We also have a specialist who assumed responsibilities on November 1, 2001 and there will be highly trained nurses to oversee these patients,” she added. The Health Minister also commended the many nurses of the Renal Unit at the Victoria Hospital for their patience in putting up with what she says was “anything but ideal working conditions for a number of years.” Government is spending over three million dollars in upgrading the renal unit at Victoria Hospital. The renal unit caters to patients suffering from kidney failure, who need to have their blood dialysed or cleaned by machines on a regular basis. |
