Vieux Fort will soon boast a new multi purpose court. The sod turning ceremony marking the commencement of
work on the project was held on Wednesday. The
sporting facility is being funded by the Government of Saint Lucia through the
National Property Development and Management Company Limited (NIPRO) and is
expected to be completed within six months.
It will replace the existing court and provide upgraded facilities. The
new multi purpose court will be constructed in two phases.
The first phase will see the construction of the court’s playing
surfaces so that location of the existing court will be available for a new
station to be built there. The second phase will commence shortly after and will
involve the construction of sheltered seating accommodation, washrooms and
changing rooms. The
total cost of the project is estimated at just over one million dollars. Member of Parliament (MP) for Vieux Fort South, Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony, called on his constituents to join forces with the government in putting an end to vandalism of youth and sports projects. According to Dr. Anthony, the government is in the process of enacting legislation against such negative behaviour.
“All
of us have to be watchmen for these projects and when we see individuals attack,
undermine and deface them, then we have a responsibility, not only to insist
that they desist, but we also have an equal responsibility to make sure that we
encourage the law to deal with these individuals. It is for this reason that I am very, very pleased that
legislation is (being) introduced to put an end to malicious damage to
property,” Dr. Anthony said. The new multi purpose court is the latest addition to the sporting facilities in Vieux Fort. Recently the Vieux Fort Playing Field had new pavillions constructed and work is well underway on a new national stadium located in Vieux Fort and scheduled for completion early next year. |
