New Morne-Du-Don/Balata Bridge Commissioned |
Thursday, November 29, 2001 - The new Morne-Du- Don/ Balata Bridge has officially been opened. The bridge, which was constructed at a cost of just under two hundred thousand dollars, was raised to about six feet, thereby reducing the likelihood of the deck of the bridge being over topped during periods of heavy rainfall. Dalton Cenac, Chief Engineer in the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities, says the new bridge is larger and higher than the previous one and is now able to accommodate two-way traffic. “The benefits of the new bridge have already been realized, because during the heavy rains which we had at the end of September and the beginning of October a number of residents in the area brought it to my attention that, for the first time, with that amount of rainfall they were able to pass and find easy access to their properties,” Cenac said. As part of the island’s Road Development Programme all bridges on primary, secondary and tertiary roads have been assessed. The assessment reveals that about 85% of the bridges, are in a good and satisfactory condition. |
