New Jetty for Laborie … New Opportunities for Residents |
Thursday, November 22, 2001 - Work on a two million dollar modern jetty for the community of Laborie has been commissioned. The project, funded entirely by the Government of Saint Lucia will replace the one destroyed by Hurricane Allen in 1980. During the sod turning ceremony on Wednesday, November 21, 2001, Minister for Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Senator Calixte George, suggested that when completed, the new jetty would generate revenue for the entire community by facilitating the exploitation of the village’s potential for scuba diving. “Laborie can become the scuba diving capital of the southern part of the country because of the natural coral reef that you have here. It will provide opportunities to generate revenue within the village, for example, through the sale of food and the establishment of diving support operations,” Senator George elaborated. According to the Member of Parliament for Laborie Honourable Velon John, the erection of the new jetty is just one component of a larger enhancement project for the village. He told residents of government’s plans to construct an administrative centre to complement the new jetty and for additional infrastructure in the Morne Le Blanc area, which overlooks the site for the new jetty. “It is going to cost us three hundred and sixty six thousand dollars to put the water and electricity at Morne Le Blanc and the day that is done Laborie is just going to mushroom,” John said. The construction of the Laborie Jetty is part of a wider project that will see the commissioning of two other jetties - one in Canaries on Friday, November 23 and the other in Anse La Raye at a date to be announced shortly. |
