A new pre-school catering for 80 children in Augier, Vieux Fort and surrounding
communities, was officially opened this week. The
French Mission for Technical Cooperation and the Poverty Reduction Fund (PRF)
together contributed $112,000
towards the ABC Fun House which, according to
its Administrator, Elsa Joyeux, was established for the purpose of
providing quality day care to pre-schoolers. Giving
the history of the school at the opening ceremony,
she said: “This centre was started in 1993 with a donation from
community members. Miss Monica
Valmont sought and obtained funds from Canada to extend the existing building.
The need to provide quality and sufficient day care space continued to grow and
it was our desire to provide such that has brought us here today.” French
Ambassador to Saint Lucia, His
Excellency Henri Vidal, said it was a project the French Embassy supported “
with much interest because it is related to the community itself - a project
close to the people and it is related to the children and to education”. Parliamentary
Representative for Laborie, Honourable Velon John, also spoke at the official
opening. He urged residents to show
appreciation for the pre-school which, he said, will impact positively on the future of the young people and
improve the quality of life for all. “It is a day that should engender joy and satisfaction within all of us who in varying capacities have been involved in this project but more so the people of this constituency and in particular the people of the Augier community who should be thankful for this project which undoubtedly will impact most positively on the future of our budding humanity and in the final analysis in the quality of life of the people,” John said. |
