The many social problems affecting young persons as well as family life and
health will find its place on the front burner when a number of persons from
various government and non-government agencies meet to review a Draft Policy on
Health and Family Life later this month. The
development of the policy is as a direct result of the concerns of Caribbean
Ministers of Health to the increased social problems affecting youth throughout
the Caribbean. According
to Curriculum Specialist in the Ministry of Education, Arthusa
Semei violence and drugs will be two of the major issues incorporated in the
policy in light of all the social issues that youth in the Caribbean experience.
“There are a number of issues that the youth seem to have a lot of
problems with. Coping with their development, with decisions, is a very,
very critical issue, critical to all persons in all of the countries of the
Caribbean and we should pay attention to them.
This is the first time that such an initiative has been taken to respond
to the problems affecting the youth,” Semei said. When
the Ministers of Health met they issued a mandate to Caribbean Community (CARICOM)
countries to institute a Health and Family Life Policy.
For Saint Lucia that mandate has been taken a step further with the
development of a draft policy, which involved individuals and groups across the
island. A national consultation to discuss the draft policy will be held on May 15, 2001 at the Caribbees Hotel. |
