More Efficient Management of St. Lucia's Road Network |
Contact: Julita Peter Friday, May 04, 2001 – The Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities is collaborating with the Caribbean Development Bank in undertaking a study to determine the most appropriate structure for the administration and management of the road network. Previous studies have pointed to institutional weaknesses that have constrained the effectiveness of the ministry’s Construction and Maintenance Unit (CMU), the unit with specific responsibility for maintenance of roads. This new study will focus, therefore, primarily on developing a comprehensive plan for the efficient management of the construction and maintenance roads. Part of the study involves a series of workshops, bringing together important stakeholders to get their views and suggestions on the various problems identified. The first in the series of workshops was held here Friday, and was facilitated by representatives of the Canadian-based firm, Lea International. The project study team is expected to submit its report within the next four to five months. In the meantime the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities, in responding to road users’ demands, has embarked on a programme to improve its servicing of the road network at a minimum cost to the economy. This programme involves preventive maintenance of roads in good condition, rehabilitation, reconstruction or improvement of the more heavily trafficked roads, expansion of roads to develop new areas and strengthening the management of the road sector. |
