Plans are afoot for the convening of another national consultation with
stakeholders aimed at facilitating further sensitisation and discussion, on the
role and function of the National Crime Commission (NCC). Attorney General and
Minister with responsibility for the Public Service Senator Petrus Compton says
the latest round of discussions will seek to fine tune recommendations coming
out of the first session held on September 19 at the Caribbees Hotel.
“Crime is one of the things that provokes fear in all of us and if you have a
body that is designed to assist in the process of reducing crime and crime
increases then questions must be asked,” Senator Compton said.
However, the Attorney General cautioned, the public must be careful not to be
too quick to jump to conclusions about the success or failure of the Commission. “We
must remember that the work of the Crime Commission will not be instantaneous
and will not produce miracles. This will be a medium to long term strategy and
we will have to be employing short term measures or complementary measures, even
while we set up the crime commission, because its strategy is going to be
prevention,” added Senator Compton. The upcoming session will precede the formal launching of the National Crime Commission the in coming weeks. |
