The Department of Consumer Affairs of the Ministry of Commerce, International
Financial Services and Consumer Affairs has begun working towards the
establishment of an independent consumer action group.
Director of Consumer Affairs Philip Mc.Clauren says the formation of such
a body is in fulfilment of Protocol Eight the treaty paving the way for the
creation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.
The
consumer action group would be more or less focussing on issues of advocacy in
the area of consumer education and providing information to consumers in this
country. We believe that
consumers generally in this country will be able to benefit from an established
group, said McClauren. He
adds that whatever group is formed locally would have some kind of relationship
with Consumers International, which is the umbrella organisation for consumer
groups worldwide. The Consumer Affairs Department will soon be involved in dialogue with a number of groups around the island, educating them on the importance of forming a consumer action group. The Consumer International Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, is assisting St Lucia with this effort and a representative will be on island next week to facilitate the group meetings. |
