- The
Ministry of Community Development has begun a process of reconciliation with the
Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) as a means of determining the status of its
accounts with that utility. The Ministry of Community Development is charged with the responsibility for making payments for water services on behalf of government. Permanent Secretary in that Ministry Jacintha St. Helen, says throughout this week, Ministry personnel together with officers from WASCO will conduct round the island visits to assess conditions of stand pipes. “The
exercise entails going out to the different areas, identifying the locations of
stand pipes and cross referencing with our bills and the account numbers,
ascertaining whether in fact the pipes do exist as appears on the account and
also whether they are operational. I cannot say the position right now will show
that we owe WASCO or that WASCO holds a credit in our favour and this is what
the reconciliation will do. I can say for example, that we are aware that there
are some bills which appear for stand pipes which are perhaps non-existent and
this is why we must reconcile,” says Mrs. St. Helen. The exercise comes to an end this week. |
