Representatives
from agencies such as hospitals, the St. Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority, the
Fire Department and the Police, have begun a five-day training programme aimed
at sharpening their skills in Mass Casualty Management. Organized
by the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) in collaboration with the Pan
American Health Organization (PAHO), the workshop seeks to follow-up on
recommendations coming out of last year’s simulated mass casualty plane crash. According
to the Acting Director of NEMO Dawn French, based on the resources that we have
in St. Lucia to manage such situations, a mass casualty event would be one where
ten or more persons were affected by the same event. The training programme forms part of NEMO’s sensitisation efforts in disaster management, as the island goes through the 2001 hurricane season. |
