Tuesday, October 2, 2001 – Caribbean countries are going to have to give higher priority to  capitalizing on opportunities in information and communication technology (ICT), to shore up their economies to offset setbacks arising from last month’s terrorist attacks on the United States.

The view was expressed by Minister of Communications, Works and Public Utilities, Hon. Senator Calixte George, in an address to the Ameritech Global Services International Conference and Trade Show which concluded here over the weekend.

According to Senator George, governments of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) will have to concentrate on the following:

bulletensuring the provision of competitively priced modern and efficient high technology telecommunications systems;
bulletCatalysing the development of an information superstructure including legal aspects that will allow for secure financial and business electronic transactions;
bulletaccelerating the development of information technology-related educational reform so that OECS  citizens will have the knowledge and skills to utilize information technology to the maximum.
bulletPopularisation of ICT so that an information technology (IT) conscious population will evolve which can adapt IT to the region’s own peculiar circumstances and later on participate in the development of IT solutions not only for the Caribbean but worldwide.
bullet Encouraging the formation of joint ventures between US/UK companies with local and regional entrepreneurs so that there will be a transfer of technology to local companies as well as providing opportunities for OECS people to benefit from the high financial returns resulting from telecommunications enterprises.

Senator George spoke on the subject: “Information Communications Technology and New Technologies in a Liberialised Market”.
