Local Government Reform Initiatives Capture International Attention |
Monday, February 05, 2001 - Initiatives on the part of the Local Government Task Force charged with the responsibility to make recommendations for reforming and strengthening local government, have come in for praise from representatives of the London based Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF). The task force is in the process of receiving feedback on a Green Paper on Local Government Reform with a view to preparing a White Paper to present to the Cabinet of Ministers and is receiving technical assistance from CLGF. Senior Project Co-ordinator of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, Lucy Slack, says she impressed at the level of enthusiasm for the process both from technocrats and from communities. According to her, "I think our role is one part of an overall process that the government is pursuing and I think that the consultations that the government is entering into now are going to be very significant. Our role is going to be looking at whether we might be able to bring in some other Commonwealth expertise either from other Caribbean islands or further a field that might be able to offer a slightly different perspective having been through this process before and thus being able to highlight some of the issues that government needs to think about that may be it hasn’t got on the table as a significant issue." Miss Slack says the Commonwealth Local Government Forum will discuss the St. Lucia scenario and pinpoint additional support mechanisms for the process. The White Paper is expected to go before the Cabinet of Ministers for ratification by March of this year. |
