Local Government Reform at Critical Stage |
Wednesday, January 31, 2001 – Plans for the re-introduction of local government in St. Lucia have reached a critical stage with the arrival of a British consultant to provide advice to the Ministry of Community Development, Culture, Local Government and Cooperatives as the reform process moves forward. Lucy Slackk from the London-based Commonwealth Local Government Forum is scheduled to meet key stakeholders on Thursday and Friday, according to Auguste Gaspard, Assistant Director of Community Services in the Ministry of Community Development, Culture, Local Government and Cooperatives. Government, which has already produced a Green Paper on Local Government, is moving towards preparation of a White Paper for consideration of Cabinet. Ms. Slackk will be involved in this important exercise as well as in a public awareness campaign that includes a media sensitisation exercise to get underway next week. Elective local government in St. Lucia was abolished about a decade ago and replaced by a system where serving members are nominated. Reforming the system was an election pledge of the incumbent administration, which took office nearly four years ago. |
