The ticklish and sensitive issue of Leaf Spot disease in the banana industry has
taken a turn for the better. Word from the Ministry of Agriculture is that
remedial measures are already in full force to arrest the problem of leaf spot
throughout the island. Director
of Agricultural Services, Julius Polius says aerial spraying will be completed
within the next three days and a ground spraying cycle will commence shortly.
He adds that the ground spraying cycle is a little tricky because of the
extent of the coverage, and slower, calling for a high level of organisation. “We have initiated that process and met with
contractors and materials are now available.
We are confident that this time around we will get the ground spraying
that is a lot more effective than it was the last time,” Polius said. According to Polius, this year the problem of leaf spot was a lot more severe with a number of other issues affecting the control of the disease. He is advising farmers that while the spraying for leaf spot control is continuing, all bunches should be sleeved, fields detrashed and all leaf spot affected leaves should be cut down. |
