Independence 2001 - The Importance of Spiritual Values |
Thursday, February 08, 2001 – Two activities for Independence this year will highlight the importance of spiritual values to nation building. The first is National Day of Prayer and Fasting on February 20, to be "headquartered" at the Castries Methodist Church. The other is a National Independence Church Service on February 22, at the Vigie Sports Complex beginning at 8 a.m.. A number of churches throughout the island have agreed to dedicate an hour of prayer on February 20, between 12 noon and 1 p.m. The Christian Council has also sought the cooperation schools, business places and the public service to set aside that hour for prayer on that day. A spokesperson for the Saint Lucia Christian Council says while the Methodist Church will be available all day for persons to stop by and pray it is hoped that persons will participate across the island wherever they are. In addition, there will be a service at the Methodist Church from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to facilitate persons who were not able to participate during the day and would like to stop by for a while. The Saint Lucia Christian Council believes that the foundation of a prosperous and unified nation lies in its religious faith. In that regard, the Council believes the National Day of Prayer and Fasting and the National Independence Church Service will heighten spiritual awareness among Saint Lucians. "Sometimes it is good to help people focus more on God … it is very important to highlight and let people just concentrate on prayer and fasting and just have some kind of interest as far as religious activities are concerned," says Chairman of the Saint Lucia Christian Council, Jeanville Guillaume. On Independence Day, the traditional Military Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on the Mindoo Philip Park following the National Independence Church Service. |
