Improved Road Maintenance for the South |
Tuesday, February 06, 2001 – The Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities is establishing a Potholing Unit to look after the maintenance and upkeep of roads in the south of the island. Joining a similar unit already in existence in the north, the southern Potholing Unit comprises a technician and a workforce of 18, divided into two gangs. It is equipped with a truck, two rollers, one bobcat and one distributor and will be responsible for the area stretching from Micoud to Soufriere. In recent times, the northern Potholing Unit, whose principal area of responsibility runs from Cap Estate to Dennery, had to help meet the needs of the south. With the start-up of the southern unit, the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities is aiming to deliver improved service by ensuring more timely and proper maintenance of the southern road system. The new unit is intended to respond promptly to complaints by road users. By helping to arrest any rapid deterioration in the quality of southern roads, the unit is expected to bring about considerable savings for the Ministry. |
