Hunte Sworn In As Minister for Foreign Affairs |
Contact: Lucius Doxerie Thursday April 5, 2001 - In what was a low-keyed ceremony for a high level appointment, former Ambassador to the United Nations, Julian Hunte was sworn in as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade at Government House, replacing parliamentary representative for Castries North East Hon. George Odlum. Earlier that same day Mr. Hunte had been appointed to the Senate on the Government side. "I am conscious that I have accepted this new mandate at a time of great challenge for St. Lucia in its international relations. The dispute that has so damaged our banana industry is not yet solve, and there are fresh dangers confronting us in which we have chosen to diversify – for example international financial services… International trade negotiations will therefore be of major concern to my tenure of office." Mr. Hunte said. Promotion of investment opportunities for St. Lucia via closer collaboration between his ministry and its overseas offices and the National Development Corporation (NDC) will also rank high on Mr. Hunte’s agenda. Senator Hon. Julian R. Hunte brings to the ministerial position a wealth of experience not only as a successful businessman but also as a diplomat and longstanding politician. |
