HIV/AIDS Awareness for Public Service Employees |
Wednesday, November 14, 2001 – Public sector employees on Wednesday, participated in the first in a series of consultations organized by the Ministry of Health to heighten their awareness to the psychosocial impact of HIV/AIDS in the workplace and to provide training skills that would enable them to reduce the risk of contracting the disease. The exercise forms part of the Ministry’s on-going HIV/AIDS Awareness and Education Campaign. It has added significance as this month is being observed in St. Lucia as HIV/AIDS Awareness Month, ahead of World Aids Day – December 01. Co-ordinator of the Campaign Edward Emmanuel says the ministry is hoping that public sector employees would be well sensitised to HIV and AIDS control and prevention and that they would take the necessary measures to protect themselves from contracting HIV and AIDS. “We are also hoping that they would take the information that is passed on to them, go back to their families and discuss the information and sensitise other family members on measures to control HIV and AIDS,” he explained. Emmanuel says the response to the consultations has so far been encouraging. He adds that the ministry is hoping to continue such workplace interventions not only in the public service but in the private sector as well. |
