The National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) earlier this week teamed-up with
the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) in reviewing
government’s donation policy in times of crisis. The
meeting, grouped representatives from Government Ministries, Police, Customs and
other law enforcement and disaster mitigation agencies, in order to apprise them
on the latest procedures. In
the words of Acting Director of NEMO Dawn French, “first of all we’re
looking to remind participants that there are procedures within the various
ministries for example, churches can go the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs
to obtain waivers on items. However during a crisis, NEMO also has the power,
both the Director and the Cabinet Secretary have the power to waive duties on
certain items.” At the same time French says, “that would not apply to any and everything, there are various categories of items that qualify as relief. Also, both at the local and regional level we advocate money. It’s easier to transfer money electronically, via cheque or postal order to your loved ones or to a government in your response.” The half day meeting, held in the conference room of the Ministry of Planning, also sought to develop a framework for the island Relief Supplies Management Policy. |
