Thursday, September 6, 2001 –
Saint Lucians will soon have an opportunity to learn
more about the history of Government House, the Governor-General’s official
residence, when the newly established Government House Museum opens its doors to
the public.
During
a media tour on Wednesday, Governor-General, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette
Louisy, explained why she decided to set up the museum which will also be
marketed as a tourist attraction. “I think a nation needs a memory, it needs a
collective memory, it needs an institutional memory and this initiative is my
contribution to that preservation of our heritage, our history,” she said.
Among the
displays will be portraits of the governors and governors-general of Saint Lucia
dating from the British colonial era.
Head of the Museum Committee, Eileen Paul, said the museum will be open to the
public on special days. “We will also be able to market (the museum) to tourism
officials here so that this will be
another attraction to encourage visitors to come to our shores,” she added.
Mrs
Paul disclosed that there are plans for the establishment of a National Museum
Foundation as the umbrella body for all the museums on the island. “Again, all
in the interest of preserving what we have on the island and looking at the
whole heritage aspect of what we have so that the generations to come will have
something to be proud of,” she explained.
The establishment of the Government House museum was supported by the Saint Lucia Nature Tourism Programme, businessman Michael Chastenet, and the Saint Lucia Electricity Services Ltd (LUCELEC). |
