Thursday, March 08, 2001 - The Government Information Service (GIS) is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing the education reform process in St. Lucia. That commitment comes in the wake of a just concluded two-day regional education and media workshop held in Antigua on March 1 and 2.

The St. Lucian participants at the workshop have formed themselves into a working group to advance education reform initiatives through the media.  Principal Information Officer at the GIS, Roger Joseph, chairs the group.

According to Joseph, the group will seek to develop a strategic plan coming out of the many recommendations from the workshop sponsored by the OECS Education Reform Unit (OERU).  That plan will be discussed with permanent secretaries within the Ministries of Education and Information and then the respective ministers.   Those recommendations that can be implemented immediately will be pursued, while those requiring sponsorship or funding will be put to relevant agencies.

“Our aim is to agitate for, develop and implement activities that will take education reform beyond the classroom and out into the public domain. Also, we are seeking to engender collaboration between the media and education officials to provide information on the whole education reform process,” said Joseph.

The GIS is expected to play a pivotal role in this process “given that the department will commence regularly scheduled programming on Cablevision Channel 2 shortly”.

Joseph added: “We expect to make ample time for educational broadcasting.  That, coupled with the launching of our redesigned website later this month with lots of information about St. Lucia – its constitution, its national symbols and protocol issues related to those, and so on  - we expect will be useful resources for students, and for promoting and assisting in the education reform process.”

The working group is made up of media and education personnel and will seek to include representatives from Parent/Teacher Associations and student bodies.
