FCCA Delegation for Cruise Talks |
Wednesday,
June 27, 2001 - A delegation of top executives of the Florida Caribbean Cruise
Association (FCCA) was scheduled to arrive in St Lucia today on a two-day visit.
The delegation is also visiting other Eastern Caribbean countries where
FCCA-affiliated cruise ships call. During
their stay in St. Lucia, the FCCA executives will hold talks with public and
private sector officials on a number of cruise-related issues, including plans
for Port Castries to become a premier cruise port, and avenues for greater
collaboration between the destination and cruise lines.
Minister
of Tourism, Hon. Menissa Rambally, is hoping the meeting will allow members of
the FCCA an opportunity to have an informed understanding of St. Lucia’s own
interest in the cruise industry. “It
is an important meeting for us here in St. Lucia because it gives us an
opportunity, both the public and private sectors, to meet with the movers and
shakers of the cruise industry and speak with them about St. Lucia’s own
interest in the cruise sector, what we have been doing, the emphasis that we
place on cruise, our investment in the cruise sector and how we see the cruise
sector continuing to be a part of the tourism industry,” she said. The
FCCA delegation will tour Port Castries and the Pointe Seraphine and La Place
Carenage duty free shopping complexes. The visit also presents an opportunity
for St. Lucia to showcase facilities that are available to cruise passengers who
visit the country. “Over the last five years particularly, the cruise industry has grown on our island,” added Rambally. “Managing that growth is important and continuing to welcome cruise passengers to St. Lucia is important for us. It is important for the cruise agents, it is important for all the persons who benefit from the cruise sector – the taxi drivers, the vendors, the various sites and facilities that we offer here on island.” |
