Explosive Opening for Jazz 2001 |
Contact: Roger Joseph Saturday, May 05, 2001 – Great weather, a spectacular fireworks display, a large crowd and excellent music! They all combined to give Jazz Festival 2001 a start worthy of a 10th anniversary special. Local singing talents Sisterhood set the tone for the evening as the group sang to a rapidly filling Mindoo Philip Park. They were followed by Jamaican reggae star Barrington Levi who heated things up with old favourites like "You Living Dangerously" and "Vice Verse Love". Then it was the Haitian sensations Tabou Combo spicing up the night with their cadence rhythms and leaving the crowd well primed for Barbadian soca stars Surface to end the celebrations in a frenzy. Jazz Festival 2001 continues throughout the week with artistes like Luther Vandross, Taj Mahal, Miriam Makeba, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Montell Jordan scheduled to perform. In all, during the period May 4 – 13, patrons can expect to take in more than 40 performances at 24 shows spread through 13 venues. |
