December 21, 2001 - The Central Library in Castries is to take delivery of the final batch of 150 books donated to St. Lucia by Britain's Millennium Commission and the British Government as part of the Everyman Millennium Library Project. The books will be presented to the Central Library on Thursday 27 December 2001 by the Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy and the Resident British Commissioner, Mr. Douglas Rice. Under this programme more than 1500 sets of 250 of the great classics of world literature have been sent to over 60 countries in the Commonwealth and developing world for use in schools, universities and libraries. St Lucia has received one complete set of this magnificent collection and the first batch of 50 books was presented to the Central Library during the launch of Library Week in February 1999. The special edition Millennium Library includes arguably, the world's greatest classics written in or translated into the English language. Included in the latest batch are such classics as Shakespeare's Comedies Vols 1 & 2, Waugh’s “Brideshead Revisited”, Dickens “Nicholas Nickleby”, The old and New Testaments, Trollope’s “Barchester Towers” and Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”. |
