Employers Federation Get More Time to Peruse New Labour Code |
Contact: John Emmanuel
The
Ministry of Legal Affairs, Home Affairs and Labour has acceded to a request from
the St. Lucia Employers' Federation to grant a 3 - 6 month extension in time to
allow for further consideration of the proposed Labour Code.
“I have given them up to the October 31, 2001 to carry out whatever analysis, studies or perusals that they want to embark on as far as the draft code is concerned,” says Labour Minister Honourable Velon John.
Although granting the extension in time, Minister John says the request was a
bit strange seeing that all stakeholders and relevant parties have been on board
from the inception of the process dating way back to October of 1998 and have
had sufficient time to examine all aspects in detail.
He
says while the extension granted would serve to further delay the implementation
of the Labour Code, it would not derail or significantly retard the process. The
St. Lucia Employers' Federation says it is undertaking a closer examination of
the labour code, in order to ensure that no aspect impacts in any unfavourable
way, on the operations of its members.
Several of the island’s trade unions have embraced the proposed code saying that
it would alter, for the good, the industrial relations climate on the island.
