Marie Harris Wednesday,
January 31, 2001 -- Another
rural community is poised to benefit under the Government’s Nature Heritage
Tourism Programme which already has given a significant boost to economic
activity in rural St. Lucia. Heritage
Tourism Programme officials are holding a one-day consultation in February with
residents of Dennery to discuss how this scenic east coast community can be
roped into the highly successful programme which has worked wonders for
Anse-la-Raye through the introduction of the Friday night fish fry. According
to Director of the Heritage Tourism Programme, Felix Finisterre, issues on the
meeting’s agenda include a discussion on the potential of handicraft items and
how to attract more cruise ship visitors to the Dennery Basin. “The
East Coast has not sold very well in terms of what we are doing through Heritage
Tours,” he noted. “So what we have been trying to do is to use it as a place
for cultural performances, so that there will be another kind of tourism where
people from other communities and eventually visitors are going to come.” Finisterre
announced that the Heritage Tourism Programme is teaming up with the Poverty
Reduction Fund to finance the construction of six vending booths along the Fond
D’or site in Dennery. “There is a proposal to build a fire station on the top of that hill and that is going to displace the vendors, so that’s another opportunity for us to look at the possibility of creating some kind of visitor facility where you can do some roadside vending during the course of the week,” he said. “During the weekends, that could be converted for some kind of weekend activity so that families and groups can come and picnic,” he added. |
