2, 2001 - The
Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs is moving to improve the “enabling
environment” for doing business in St. Lucia with the proposed adoption of an
industrial policy. Manufacturers
and other business interests have received the first draft of the policy, drawn
up with technical assistance from the Commonwealth. The Ministry is receiving
their feedback, which will be critical in determining the final document. “The
policy seeks to address some of the bottlenecks faced by businessmen and other
persons involved in industry. In terms of its relationship to the business
community, one of the first things that one can look forward to is an improved
enabling environment for doing business, one that is more facilitative to
industrial development,” explained Permanent Secretary Cosmos Richardson. He
added: “(The policy) looks at
some of the principal issues associated with administrative bottlenecks, those
associated with coordination, issues associated with processing of requests for
incentives and seeks to provide a more transparent incentive regime. It
addresses issues of technology, how are we going to position ourselves to take
advantage of the new technologies.” Following refinements to the draft, the final document is expected to go before Cabinet for ratification by the end of March. |
