Peter Friday,
September 21, 2001 – The
sale of some products bearing non-English labels is causing
the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards major concern.
According
to the Bureau’s Communications Officer Sariah Best-Joseph, the sale of
products without English labels in Saint Lucia is a violation of the law which
means that retailers could be liable. The practice also represents a threat to
the health and safety of consumers,
she said.
“We
want to work with our local manufacturers, our distributors of products. We want
to work with them to remind them that there is a national labelling standard
that they can access from the Bureau of Standards to update themselves on the
information that is contained in the standard in order for them to comply,”
she said. To
raise public awareness about the importance of labels and the national labelling
standards, the Bureau of Standards
is planning a workshop for October 11. It is open to manufacturers, pharmacies,
distributors and the general public. The
workshop is one of a series of activities the Bureau is staging in observance of
World Standards Day on October 14, 2001. |
