Monday, June 11, 2001 – Efforts at sustaining quality water by residents of Talvan in Babonneau have begun to pay off.   Today, Community Forestry Day, residents were awarded the Department of Forestry Number One Community Group for the year.

The Talvan Water Catchment Group has been involved in a number of projects funded by the OECS Natural Resources Management Unit (NRMU).   One of the projects involved the rehabilitation of the Talvan River to provide better quality water for the community.  Acting Chief Forestry Officer, Michael Andrew says “Just about two years now the group was involved in the whole sensitisation like several groups throughout the country, but the group has taken an initiative, seeing that there is an important task for them to do in terms of water quality in their area.” Basically the projects entailed the introduction of new technology, for example the use of geo textile, which is a sort of fabric material that is used to hold loose in place while allowing for rehabilitation of that area.

Community Forestry Day  is a time for reflection on the importance of community groups in the whole management of forest and natural resources.  It also signifies the partnership between communities and the Department of Forestry.    “We have five forest ranges (around the island) as part of our management and there is an activity scheduled for each of the areas,” said Andrew.
