This year’s National Arts and Craft Festival, being hosted by the
village of Choiseul, will not only highlight the viability of art and craft
products made in that community but will also help to impress upon residents the
possibility of greater economic benefits which this industry can bring,
according to the coordinator of the event.
Said
McArthur Philip: “We’re looking for
new designs, variety and different ways of doing things.
Different communities in Choiseul have their special cultural background
in terms of their craft, for example,
La Pointe which is famous for coal pot making, Mon Zion, Mongourge,
mostly for chair making, Dakentien for basket weaving, so we want to capture
this."
He
added: “When persons come here to the festival, they will be able to go to a
community booth and see the various cultural aspect of these communities.
In terms of preparing the people for this festival, we want to encourage
the people to come with new designs, hence we have collaborated with the
National Skills Development Centre to run a training workshop to help the
persons in design, labelling and preparing the products.”
The
Choiseul Heritage Tourism Development Steering Committee is throwing its support
behind the event. According to chairperson Francis Blanchard, a primary
objective is to highlight the potential of the various heritage sites, using the
festival as an element of greater influence in sensitizing the Choiseul
community to harness its resources in Arts and Craft and Nature Heritage
Tourism.
The
National Arts and Craft Festival runs from Friday, October 26 through to Sunday
October 28, 2001. |
