Cheaper & Standardised Schoolbooks |
Wednesday, July 18,
2001 - The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development Youth and
Sports has announced that Oxford University Press has provided the Ministry with
discounts of 30% on textbooks 35% on Dictionaries and Thesauruses and 35%
on children's story books for the academic year 2001/2002. The Ministry will be
liaising with booksellers to ensure that these discounts are
passed on directly to parents, and are not absorbed in higher profit
margins by booksellers. In a thank-you note to
the Oxford University Press Regional Agent, Mr. Rufus Khodra, the Minister for Education, Human Resource
Development, Youth & Sports, Honourable Mario Michel expressed the
Ministry's deep appreciation for this measure which he said comes at a time when
the rationalization of school book lists will make it easier on parents'
finances. The discount from Oxford
is expected to make a significant difference to the cost of educational texts in
St. Lucia. On Thursday, the Ministry takes another step in bringing down the overall costs of schoolbooks when the Minister will formally sign an executive order for the standardization of all school textbooks.
The ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the GIS Studios. |
