National Television NetworkThursday, May 17, 2001 - The Government Information Service (GIS) today moves a step closer towards playing a more active role in St. Lucia’s expanding media industry when it begins testing its new cable television public broadcasting service on Channel 2.

The trial run, which starts at 6 p.m. and lasts for four hours, will feature an exciting mix of programming. There will be news in English and Kweyol, as well as features dealing with domestic, Caribbean and international  issues of interest and relevance to St. Lucians.

Embert Charles“By launching this service, we are seeking primarily to increase opportunities for the timely dissemination of accurate information about government services so that we can have a better informed citizenry,” said Director of Information Services, Embert Charles.

“Our role, however, extends beyond that,” Charles added. “For example, we intend to actively contribute to our cultural development by providing local producers with an outlet to broadcast their products. As a result, St. Lucians will see more television programmes which reflect their own images, perspectives and experiences.”

Primus & John will anchor the NewsBesides news, tonight’s inaugural test broadcast will offer interesting features about government, the environment, traditional music in the Caribbean, and the rise of multi-racialism in the United Kingdom. The broadcast will be repeated from 10 p.m until 2 a.m.

Government Information ServiceFollowing evaluation of the test runs, GIS hopes to launch regular daily broadcasts on Channel 2 within the next few weeks. These broadcasts will be based initially on the programming format used in the test runs.

The introduction of the Channel 2 service forms part of Government’s efforts to improve public awareness and understanding of its operations, programmes and policies through the timely delivery of accurate information to St. Lucians at home and abroad, as well as others with an interest in St. Lucia.
