CARICOM Heads to Sign Off on C.C.J. Next Month |
Wednesday, January 31, 2001 - The many suggestions and recommendations emanating from consultations with bar associations in the region have begun to be factored into the final document that is scheduled to go before CARICOM heads of government when they meet in Barbados next month. Attorney General Senator Petrus Compton says the Legal Affairs Committee finalized the document last week when it met in Guyana. The Committee is responsible for leading the process towards the establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice. "In this new final draft we were also to incorporate a number of suggestions made by the presidents of bar and law associations in the region and I think we have gone a long way towards satisfying these persons that the Attorneys General genuinely wanted consultation. In fact, we have been advised that one such leader who was strongly against some of the provisions of the bill is now more satisfied. We have been able to ensure the bar and law associations that the issues of political interference, financing and so on and well addressed and so we’re well on our way," said Senator Compton. Following the signing of the agreement on the setting up of the Caribbean Court of Justice by CARICOM heads next month, the process of implementation will begin. That will involve the recruitment process for judges, the setting up of a regional judicial and legal services commission and equipping and staffing the headquarters of the court. |
