Marie Harris Monday, October 29, 2001 - The establishment of a network of Caribbean publishers will be the main agenda item when Caribbean publishers meet in Montego Bay, Jamaica from November 01-03, 2001. The idea of such a network surfaced during Saint Lucia’s Encounters of Excellence series of public lectures and discussion leading up to the island’s anniversary of independence two years. The Encounters of Excellence series is the brainchild of the island’s Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy who has been invited to make a presentation on Creole and National Development at the Jamaica meeting. “The
theme of the conference is Reclaiming Our Own Voices and my presentation
will focus on the value of indigenous languages in the Caribbean, not only Saint
Lucian French Creole but Papemento, Swernack in Suriname and the other
indigenous languages in the Caribbean,” said Dame Pearlette. The
Governor General added that making a case for letting “our indigenous
voices” be heard in no way minimizes the need for us to strengthen our
competence in an international language. “We
need to strike a balance between the value of the indigenous culture and our
interaction with the international community,” she explained. |
