Tuesday, February 20, 2001 --  St. Lucia is looking to attract more tourism business out of the New England area of the United States as a result of a decision by Air Jamaica to increase flights out of Boston.

Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Honourable Menissa Rambally, who was on a promotional tour of the US last week, used the occasion to meet officials of Air Jamaica. She said the decision to increase service out of Boston is testimony of Air Jamaica’s confidence in the government and people of Saint Lucia.

“(Through) the efforts of Air Jamaica along with the St. Lucia Tourist Board in the market place in Boston and New England area, we are confident that these promotional activities will boost St. Lucia’s image in the marketplace and we can see increases coming out of that area,” the minister said.

She added:  “Our discussions with the tour operator companies did indicate that the potential is there for St. Lucia to grow business out of the New England area generally and that our promotion activities have to be increased so that we can realise the full potential of that.”

Meanwhile, the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association has applauded the initiative of the St. Lucia Tourist Board and the Ministry of Tourism to aggressively promote the island as a destination of choice for US travellers.

The Association also has commended the St. Lucia Tourist Board on its new marketing thrust.  The Tourist Board recently revamped its marketing strategy making it more sales-driven, consumer-oriented and cost-effective.

The SLHTA said it is looking forward to closer collaboration with the Tourist Board in promoting St. Lucia as a competitive, wholesome and preferred destination.
