Better Service from LUCELEC Coming |
Contact: John Emmanuel Thursday, March 1, 2001 – Customers of the St. Lucia Electricity Services Ltd. (LUCELEC) can look forward to improved service from the utility company arising from talks between the company and Government on the implementation of recommendations in the LUCELEC Review Commission’s report, according to Public Utilities Minister, Senator Hon. Calixte George. Senator George reported that LUCELEC and government representatives had reached agreement on a number of issues at their latest meeting. "For example, the customer and the way in which the customer is treated, that will be taken into consideration very quickly and a new customer charter is to be out soon," he said. The minister added: "On the question of the relationship between LUCELEC and Government, it was agreed that we would have a formal relationship. Concerning the tariff mechanisms, it was agreed that LUCELEC would take a cost study on those tariffs and that adjustments would have to be made as far as the tariff is concerned and LUCELEC has agreed to start taking action on this." Senator George reported that agreement was also reached on the contentious issue of calculating the fuel surcharge. The company has agreed to review the mechanism, in an attempt to move away from the 1973 base price, currently being used to arrive at the fuel surcharge rate. The practice of monthly metre readings is also expected to resume once again, the minister said. |
