Anse la Raye will have a new and modern police station soon. Thursday (June
29, 2001) saw the turning of the sod to signify the start of construction of the
new facility estimated at EC$774,000.00. The
new police station which will be constructed in a new location near the entrance
of the village, will serve as a replacement for the 30-year-old existing police
station. Member
of Parliament for Anse la Raye/Canaries Honourable Cyprian Lansiquot explained
that the present police station has outlived its usefulness and that its present
location does not lend itself to expansion. “We are not just giving the people of Anse la Raye a nice
new building, we are concerned about enhancing the services which will be
provided,” he added. Meanwhile
Deputy Commissioner of Police Neil Parker who was at the sod-turning ceremony
encouraged residents to embrace the idea of community policing, adding that the
partnership between the community and the police is an important ingredient in
combating crime. Said
Parker, “While the police has the responsibility to discharge, they cannot
operate in isolation and be successful. Likewise if the community within which
they function does not provide support needed, then success is unlikely.” Thursday’s
sod turning forms part of a series of similar exercises around the island and
during the past few weeks, symbolic of the number of key development initiatives
by government aimed at strengthening and advancing the police force.
Four other stations are under varying levels of construction and
preparation for construction in Dennery, Micoud, Vieux-Fort and La Resource/Richfond,
representing an investment of close to 22 million dollars.
Another four police stations are being refurbished in Laborie, Choiseul,
Marigot and Canaries at a cost of close to 2.5 million dollars. The construction of police and fire stations is being done through an agreement with the National Insurance Property Development Organisation (NIPRO), a subsidiary of the National Insurance Scheme, on a Build-On-Lease-Transfer mechanism (BOLT). NIPRO has agreed to finance 100% of the construction cost of the stations which will then be leased to government on agreed terms and conditions. |
