CARICOM Ministers of Culture have tabled a motion to the CARICOM Heads calling
for greater support to the development of culture in the region. The Ministers
who ended a three-day meeting in the Bahamas recently, looked at such issues as
marketing and promotion of all Caribbean festivals, joint marketing
opportunities and initiatives on the part of the Caribbean and for greater focus
on the organizational as opposed to the entertainment elements of the festivals. Saint
Lucia’s representative at that meeting, Culture Minister Honourable Damian
Greaves, said among the issues which resulted in tabling the motion was a
decision by the European Union to withdraw funding for workshops, training and
other assistance for people involved in the music and entertainment industry in
St. Lucia. Mr. Greaves
stated that the Culture Ministers called on the CARICOM Heads to lobby on their
behalf to the EU to review the decision. Among
the other issues discussed were, the business of the CARICOM Foundation of Arts
and Culture (CARIFORUM) and the rationalization of UNESCO field officers in the
Caribbean. The
CARICOM Ministers of Culture also recommended that CARIFESTA be held every two
years. |
