Prime Minister, Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, has granted approval to the
Commissioner of Police to train 50 new police officers.
This batch of law enforcement officers will fill existing vacancies and
provide the police service with additional officers. Dr.
Anthony says he recognizes that while additional officers are helpful, this is
not the ultimate solution to combating crime.
A forceful and sustained effort on several fronts will be needed if the
island is to successfully fight crime. That
is why, he says, his government has adopted a holistic approach to the issue
involving short, medium and long-term goals for judicial, legal, penal, law
enforcement and legislative reform. Many of these initiatives have begun, such
as revamping the operations of the police service, reviewing the criminal code,
establishing a new Evidence Act, construction of a modern correctional facility
and developing a crime fighting strategy for the police service.
The 50 new police officers and the Rapid Response Unit to be attached to the Gros Islet Police Station dedicated exclusively to prevent and reduce crime in the tourism sector and to respond to reports of criminal activity are just two of the immediate measures to be employed in improving the police presence on the streets and in trouble spots. |
