2001 Census Preliminary Report shows Socio-economic changes in Anse-la-Raye |

- The population of Saint Lucia in 1991 stood at 133,308 and excluded persons
residing in institutions. The actual 1991 population including institutional
populations was 135,244. The
2001 figure without the institutional numbers stands at 152,519. The total de
facto population of Saint Lucia in 2001, which grew by 14.4%, is 158,018
inclusive of institutional populations. In
1991,the population of the district of Anse-la-Rays along with its fishing
village was 5135, of which 17% suffered from some form of disability, ranging
from lost or partial lost of sight, hearing, speech and mental retardation
amongst others. Ten years later, the population has grown by 22.7% to 6195, with
only approximately 6% now suffering from some form of disability. The
Roman Catholic faith in 1991 was 80% of the population, with the Seventh Day
Adventist having the next best following with 11%. Pentecostal had 3%, and
Baptist 2%. The Rastafarian and Church of Sod faiths within the population were
less than 1% following, each. Ten years later, 64% of the 2001 population are
Roman Catholic, 14% are Seventh Day Adventist, 2% are Baptist and 2%
Rastafarian. Formal
education was accessed by only 34% of the 1991 population, and though the number
of students increased in 2001, only 30% of the 2001 population of 6195 enjoyed
or are enjoying formal education. Of the 1991 school age population, 14%
attended primary school, 2% attended secondary school, and less than 1% attended
university. Of
the 2001 school age population, 12% attended primary school, 6% went or are
presently attending secondary school and the number of persons who attended or
are attending university is still below the 1% mark. Approximately
624 or 12% of the school age population attained a certificate from a formal
education institution in 1991, with 898 or 16% receiving a certificate in 2001. 32%
of Anse-la-Raye's 1991 population worked. 1% had a job, 2% looked for work, 1%
wanted work and 15% were confined to the home doing household chores. In
contrast, out of the 2001 population, 32% worked with less than 1% having a job
but did not work, 10% looked for work and 1% wanted work. The
2001 Population and Housing Census revealed in its Preliminary Report on
Anse-la-Raye that, 10% of the working force received on the job training, 1% are
apprentices and less than 1% of the 6195 population used a correspondence
course, attended a vocational trade school or went to a commercial secretarial
school for training respectively. Private
study was utilised by less than 1% of the work force for training and a similar
percentage used the on campus system at university for training. 15%
of Anse-la-Raye's adults are legally married according to the 2001 Census
Preliminary Report; with 15% living in a common-law union and 6% have a visiting
partner. Working
at home, according to the 2001 Preliminary Report is done by 6% of
Anse-la-Raye's workforce, 40% of the workforce walk to work, and 41% used the
public transport system. Census
