Independence 2000Thursday, January 13, 2000 – Work on the site for the launching of Independence 2000 on Sunday is progressing smoothly. The Soufriere Playing Field, which will host the event, has been leveled off while work on the stage and platforms should begin later today.

During a site visit Wednesday, Chairman of the National Independence Day Committee, Anthony Severin said Soufriere was chosen for the launching of Independence in an effort to bring back to the people of that community a sense of pride and ownership. "We felt that it was necessary to have some activity in Soufriere to say to the people, things have not ended for you, you are still on the national agenda and despite all the problems you’ve had with Hurricane Lenny that we could still host the official launching in Soufriere," said Severin.

Parking for persons attending the ceremony will be on the Palmiste Playing Field and near the Saint Lucia Copra Manufactures. Parking for officials will be upper Bridge Street and near the hospital.
