Vieux Fort Fisheries Complex in Full Use by January 2001 |
August 24, 2000 - The St. Lucia Fish Marketing Corporation has announced that while all infrastructural works have not yet been completed to enable the commencement of fish processing and retail operations at the recently completed Fisheries Complex in Vieux Fort, the facility has been in use since February of this year. The record landings of fish during the peak season of February to April, caused most of the Fish Marketing Corporation’s existing cold storage space to be filled, resulting in the Corporation requesting permission to utilize the Vieux Fort Fisheries Complex while construction was underway. So far the Corporation has stored a total of 222 tons of fish at the facility, which is 89% of the full storage capacity. In addition to utilizing the cold storage facilities, the Corporation from March 2000, has been using the ice making machine and a five-ton insulated truck to transport fish to and from Vieux Fort. In fact, the facility has been able to generate ice for all fish operations in Vieux Fort. The Corporation is in the process of carrying out additional infrastructural work to enable the plant to be certified to international health and sanitary practices, as well as customizing equipment to the specifications of the layout of the plant. Concurrently, administrative arrangements, including the recruitment of staff, are being undertaken. All of these measures will be completed around November or December, at which time the facility will be ready to provide full service to fishermen and the general public.
