Vieux Fort Comprehensive Under Review |
Wednesday, January 26, 2000 - The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports, has appointed a nine member commission to review the status, functions and strategic development of the Vieux Fort Comprehensive School. According to Communications Officer in the Ministry, John Sealy, the commission will take into account the conclusions of a previous commission appointed in 1993. "When the report was presented in '93, nothing actually took place then with the report. Times have changed and there are certain things that would have probably remained the same. We need to find out whether the problems that existed back in 1993, still exist today," said Sealy. The commission will be required to determine the current scope of educational demand in the southern part of the island and its trajectory over the next 10 years, and make recommendations on the most appropriate reconfiguration of the school to serve the needs of the south. It is expected that a consultative process involving staff at the school, students, parents, members of the business community and the general public will be undertaken to ensure the views of critical stakeholders are incorporated in the recommendations. "We need to understand the Vieux Fort Secondary School does not fit the basic structure of other secondary schools on the island. It has a sixth form and there are two campuses operating," said Sealy. He also noted, "There have been new developments in the south of the island. We have the free zone starting up, there are new investment opportunities and we need to see whether the Vieux Fort Secondary School could meet the requirements that would be called for in the future." The Commission will present its report to the Honorable Minister of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports by June 30, 2000. Mr. Julius James will chair the commission. The other members are Teddy Bernard, Madison Stanislaus, Wayne Cumberbatch, Ulric Alphonse, Kingsley Pawlette, Hilary Darcheville, Ramparsad Boodhoo, Marylene Francis and Marclellus Albertin. |
